Through observation of nature, in particular of the coral reefs, which absorb the energy of the breaking waves in a very efficient manner, ARRECIFE ENERGY SYSTEMS proposes an innovative design for the obtention of electrical power from the ocean waves.

The design is based on a platform that causes the waves to break over it and extracts their energy by means of cross-flow turbines located on the platform. This approach allows extracting both the potential and horizontal kinetic energy of the waves as opposed to other technologies only making use of the potential one, leading to capacity factors around 40%.

The concept proposed by ARRECIFE is a scalable, modular system that is able to extract energy from a varied set of wave conditions. In the frame of the EuropeWave project, ARRECIFE intends to develop a 300 kW version of its concept that is adapted to high-energy sites such as BIMEP and EMEC and can be used for grid electricity production.

ARRECIFE intends to make substantial changes on the design of its WEC with respect to previous prototypes, eliminating the immersion system and redesigning the positioning of the turbines on the platform, the platform itself and the PTO system. This will increase the performance and availability of the system and provide a competitive LCoE.

Arrecife project was created by Ph.D. Professor José Javier Doria over 25 years ago. After years of experimentation in the field of fluids mechanics, Professor Doria could demonstrate how there was a formula to be followed in the design of turbines and different airfoils. This led to improvements applicable in the fields of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics.
