TRIMARAN

Arrecife Energy Systems:

Trimaran

Through observation of nature, in particular of the coral reefs, which absorb the energy of the breaking waves in a very efficient manner, ARRECIFE proposes an innovative design for the production of electrical power from the ocean waves.

ARRECIFE TRIMARAN is a floating platform with a multi-turbine system capable of capturing wave energy to produce electricity. The turbine design mimics the behavior of the coral reefs, by breaking the waves and extracting the energy. The proposed technology allows extracting both the potential and horizontal kinetic energy of the waves as opposed to other technologies only making use of the potential one.

The modular and scalable technology, uses turbines connected to electric generators (like other successful technologies such as wind or hydraulic systems). These turbines are powered by waves and currents, producing electricity in an efficient manner.

The final goal of this project is to develop 0.3 MW units based on the aforementioned technology, which can be installed by forming an array into wave energy farms for mass electrical energy production connected to the electrical grid.

Arrecife project was created by Ph.D. Professor José Javier Doria over 25 years ago. After years of experimentation in the field of fluids mechanics, Professor Doria could demonstrate how there was a formula to be followed in the design of turbines and different airfoils. This led to improvements applicable in the fields of aerodynamics and hydrodynamics.
