Blue Horizon 250 is the latest embodiment of Mocean’s recognisable WEC architecture: a hinged raft with forward and aft wave channels, geometrically optimised using Mocean’s in-house expertise, and a direct-drive electric PTO. Building on the successes and lessons learned at smaller scale, via Blue X in the WES NWEC program, it introduces key innovations across numerous IEA Evaluation Framework areas.
At 250 kW scale, the commercial applications for Blue Horizon include offshore oil & gas, islands & remote communities, and early grid projects, where nearer to longer term value propositions have been identified.
In Phase 1, Mocean has progressed on the various subsystems, building confidence and leading to a robust basis of design.
Phase 2 involves a FEED to continue pursuing commercial and technical development, particularly across power performance, availability, reliability, and affordability. Focus areas will include:
A geometry ‘freeze’, following a final optimisation step
Further proving the Vernier Hybrid Machine (VHM) PTO at larger scale
Implementing reliability measures via modularity, redundancy, and more detailed operational design considerations
Refining costings across all work packages to meet commercial targets
For EuropeWave, Mocean proposes to build a first-of-a-kind version of a 250 kW WEC product, bringing in additional funding as required to support manufacture and operations. This ambitious target serves to maximise the benefits of the program, and – crucially – to accelerate the technology towards commercialisation.
