Blue Horizon is the latest embodiment of Mocean’s recognisable WEC architecture: a hinged raft with forward and aft wave channels, geometrically optimised using Mocean’s in-house expertise, and a direct-drive electric PTO. Building on the successes and lessons learned at smaller scale, via Blue X in the WES NWEC program, it introduces key innovations across numerous IEA-OES Evaluation Framework areas.
At 250 kW scale, the commercial applications for Blue Horizon focus on islands & remote communities, while also including early grid projects and off-grid applications, such as oil & gas and aquaculture. Across these key markets, nearer to longer term value propositions have been identified.
In Phase 2, Mocean completed a FEED, progressing on technical and commercial readiness; freezing the geometry, selecting a fabricator, and continuing to build case studies, pipeline, and key stakeholder relationships.
Phase 3 involves detailed design, a full-scale build, and 12 months at-sea testing of a first-of-a-kind WEC at either EMEC or BiMEP, leading to TRL6/7 (TRL1-9 scale) - minimum IEA Stage 3. Focus areas will include:
Building the novel PTO at full-scale – combining a Vernier Hybrid Machine (VHM) with an associated linkage mechanism to boost energy yield/mass
Exporting power to the grid – ensuring grid compatibility and compliance
Meeting targets set across IEA-OES evaluation areas, and improving across power performance, availability, reliability, and survivability in particular
Refining costs and our commercial roadmap - ensuring follow up projects exist that are viable and attractive to customers and end-users
To complete the full-scale 250 kW Blue Horizon programme, Mocean will bring in private funding as required. This ambitious target serves to maximise the benefits of the program, and – crucially – to build confidence in the industry and accelerate the technology towards commercialisation.
