The ACHIEVE project completes key tests to improve device design and performance

During Phase 2, CETO Wave Energy Ireland (CWEI) undertook front-end engineering design (FEED), tank testing, PTO testing, and certification and commercialisation activities. Key deliverables included a significant body of design work and the tank testing campaign results in which Carnegie’s reinforcement learning (RL) controller was successfully demonstrated in collaboration with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, a first for the wave energy industry.

Two CETO models were tested at the Cantabria Coastal Ocean Basin in Spain, the key achievements being improved performance through the application of the advanced controllers and the successful demonstration of the device’s unique survival strategy. The team was joined for the tank testing by the Hewlett Packard Enterprise team from their global centre of excellence in artificial intelligence and data to view the RL controller physical testing in action.
