emWave

The emWave project will develop a Wave Energy Converter (WEC) based on an electroactive membrane. This new concept combines the architecture of a floating version of the Bombora mWave concept with the concept of Dielectric Elastomer Generator Power Take Off system (DEG-PTO).

The DEG based mWave technology would become part of the product portfolio of Bombora. Bombora’s WEC technology enables the capture of utility scale wave energy in a way that has never been attempted previously.  It is very robust and relatively insensitive to wave direction. It is believed that the membrane is the key to unlocking wave power.

Lead Company: Bombora Wave Power Europe Ltd

Founded in 2012, Bombora is an award-winning ocean energy company with origins in Perth, Western Australia, now based in Pembroke Dock, Wales. Bombora has embarked upon a mission to provide wave based renewable energy to markets all over the world.  A technology road map has been mapped out to enable their innovative mWave converters to deliver environmentally friendly, utility scale energy for national electricity grids.

Bombora is working in partnership with Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna (SSSA).  As a leading academic institution SSSA has conducted world class research into the development of dielectric elastomeric membranes.
